A family tragedy and some protracted ill-health have meant that again this year we have not managed to do very much in the garden. The hedges have thrived with the wet autumn and spring and we have topped the hornbeam and holm oak hedges around the kitchen garden for the first time. The medlar planted last year is already fruiting, but the two quince trees planted at the same time carried quince leaf blight and so are being slower to establish. The ponds have matured and this year we have had a pair of moorhens breed successfully beside the small pond.
Gardening has taken a back seat over the past year and so there has been relatively little change in the garden. The hedges have grown well and a few more trees have been planted, including nashi pears, unusual quince varieties and a medlar. Sadly one of the pair of Wollemi pines succumbed, probably because of the exposed dry position. The lilies in the ponds have been flowering this year and the pads have been well used by dragonflies and damselflies, which have been abundant.
